Compared to when there used to be more legroom and not all seats were filled, today’s airplanes seem to have shrunk considerably. ‘Bums in seats’ have become an important statistic. Additional controls put in place after 9/11 have not helped either. Having to be at the airport hours before take off really adds to the time needed to get from point A to point B. Greater adherence to airline weight restrictions makes packing and deciding what to pack an ever more ominous chore and lightweight quality rolling carry on luggage becomes ever more important in making airline travel bearable.

Airline luggage restrictions can turn airline travel into something we dread.

I used to look forward to airline travel very much. So did our kids. The air travel part of the holiday was something we would not have wanted to do without; even though rolling carry on luggage was still in it’s infancy. Now? I’m not so sure. Airline travel has changed!

Yes, there were no movies, but we could listen to music, read, or get to know our neighbor. We used to visit more and depend on being entertained less

Thinking back, one trip in particular stands out. It was just I and the three children, 3, 8 and 10. You would think the quicker we got the flight over with the better, but no. In those days there was legroom even in economy. Flight attendants – we called them stewardesses – were picture perfect in appearance and customer service. Meals were served on real china and the cutlery was silver. Our kids played cat’s cradle with kids they had just met, while we parents socialized across the aisle.

All this has changed. The expectation today is for cheap airline travel. It is no longer anything we expect to save for until the necessary funds are in place. In the past, the only cheaper rates available were through a registered group that chartered an airplane. Today all airlines try to cut costs because that is what the customer seems to want. Costs are cut at the expense of quality of service.

Fortunately, some airlines try very hard to reinvent customer service — no meals, but stand-up comics for flight attendants. Screens built into the back of the seat in front of you permit TV watching and game playing. What suffers, in my opinion, is communication between passengers.

Being aware of the carry on limits has become more important than ever, and checking airline exemptions ahead of packing is more than just a good idea. Fortunately today’s more lightweight materials help keep the weight of the empty luggage in check, thus making airline travel bearable. More neighborly interaction with fellow passengers would make it more enjoyable.

Compared to when there used to be more legroom and not all seats were filled, today’s airplanes seem to have shrunk considerably. ‘Bums in seats’ have become an important statistic.

As a veteran traveler, you want to explore a truly “off the beaten path” location that is treasured by historians and cultural anthropologists but largely off limits to run of the mill tourists from western nations. Bhutan offers unimaginable vistas of mountains and rivers as well as intriguing cultural artifacts, such as seventh century monasteries and fortresses as well as high mountain passes, some of which take you well over 15,000 feet above sea level.

The country provides exotic biking, hiking and trekking opportunities. Enjoy native cheese chili, warm hospitality, and local lama dances, and bargain at vegetable markets and shopping centers for handmade trinkets and tasty delicacies.

From the cultural heartland of the country in the Bhumthang Valley of Central Bhutan to the more cosmopolitan centers of western Bhutan, to make the best of Bhutan you need ideally at least a 12-day experience that takes you from Paro and Thimphu to Phobjikha, Trongsa, Wangdue, and beyond, as far as Jakar and Ura.

Thanks to the Bhutanese government’s restrictive travel policies, it can be difficult to book tours and venture to the far-flung sights and festivals of this magical country. Fortunately, the travel restrictions assure to maintain the Shangri La effect found in this remote Himalayan country as at most only 25,000 tourists per year come to visit Bhutan.

You can defy the myths associated with travel to the country and have a trip that’s as unique as it is spectacular. For instance, most conventional wisdom suggests that the best time to visit is during either the fall or the spring. However, Bhutan offers exceptional scenery and scintillating snow-capped views also during early winter, and the country provides a lush, exotically rain-drenched atmosphere during the summer. Moreover, when you visit during the “off seasons,” you can pretty much have the country to yourself.

Included in most packages are transfers per itinerary, meal costs, accommodations, and entrance fees to all the monuments. Visit fortresses constructed to defend the kingdom from Tibetan invaders and feel the pull of history. These monuments, known as Dzongs, offer insight into an ancient culture reworked by the tides of modern history.

You can catch a glimpse of Bhutan in three to six days but for truly exceptional tours to this modern-day Shangri-La you need to traverse the entire country, from west to east, and for that you best consider a 14 to 17 days odyssey that will assure you’ll be touching most of the major landmarks in this South Asian gem.

For many people the thought of spring breaks is something that gives them that feeling of finally winter is over and let’s get out and do something. College students especially find this as a time to be able to unwind, get together with some close friends and go somewhere to let off some steam and have a a lot of fun. But having too much fun can sometimes come with trouble, so here are a few things that might help to ensure that you not only have a fun packed spring break but you stay safe and out of trouble at the same time.

Wherever you are planning on going, especially if you have never been there, it is an excellent idea for you to do some research to see what their local laws are, especially if you are planning on going to a different country. Age limits for drinking alcohol varies and their drug laws can vary from minor infractions to big time prison time. So be very careful. The best advice is stay away from drugs and alcohol and you won’t have any worries.

If you are planning your holidays to a different country it’s also important that you learn a little something about the culture of the locals. You should also find out if there are any major social issues that the country might be in the middle of. Major social issues could really end your fun vacation in a heartbeat.

No matter where you are going, don’t go around flaunting a lot money, expensive jewelry or even really expensive clothes. And as much as you might hate it consider leaving all of your expensive high tech toys at home, and that means your iPhone. Consider getting an inexpensive cell phone that you can buy prepaid minutes for instead.

Always make sure that no matter where you go, even if it’s during the day that you always have someone with you. This is of course very important at night. Never visit bars or night clubs at night completely alone. Always stay together no matter what is going on.

Make sure that when you are on your trip that you respect other people. Try not to be extremely loud or rude in front of other people, especially strangers. Remember just because you are on spring break does not mean the person next to you is. Hotels and motels will kick you out without hesitation if you get too rowdy and out of control.

More than likely since you are coming out from under the darkness of winter you are going to be headed for someplace that has lots of sun. Remember that you are going there with winter skin so it’s a good idea to take lots of sunscreen with you. The last thing you want is to have your trip ruined because you are so sunburned that you can barely move.

For adventure travel, Ethiopia is a great travel destination. Are you prepared for bad roads, harsh conditions, and cold nights camping out? Then be prepared for having the time of your life visiting Ethiopia!

When many people think about Ethiopia, it probably is because of yet another famine disaster that hit the region. They envision the images shown on television, of skinny children with big bellies and flies all over their faces. Sad, but this is not the only aspect of this country in the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia is not a rich country, and the threat of famine always lingers here, especially in the dry southeastern regions. Visitors will be confronted with poor people, dressed in worn clothes and begging for money if they are familiar with tourists.

In fact, Ethiopia has a lot of interesting places, and makes a fantastic destination for adventure travel.

Flying in to Addis Ababa, get set for your first surprise: you can see clearly how the capital of Ethiopia is located on a highland plateau, surrounded by a landscape of canyons and mountains. At 2000 meters, the climate is therefore not as hot as you would expect it to be.

Addis is just another big African city, but as you move away from the city, you will be surrounded by great landscapes and views of the highlands.

Blue Nile Falls

Further north in these highlands lies the origin of the Nile, often searched for by Livingstone and other explorers. The stretch of Nile in Ethiopia is called Blue Nile, and along its way are the beautiful Blue Nile Gorge, the magnificent Blue Nile Falls, and Bahir Dar at Lake Tana, an ideal place to relax on a campsite.

On the islands in Lake Tana, you will find the first signs of the rich Coptic Christian heritage in Ethiopia. Churches with typical Ethiopian Coptic art and relics are hidden in the forests of the islands. And if you think these are interesting, move up north, to the true religious historic treasures of Ethiopia.

Visit the historic town of Aksum, with its stelae and the famous obelisk returned by Italy in 2005. The castle ruins in the old Royal city of Gondar are also worth seeing. But especially wonder at the rock hewn churches of Lalibela.

Lalibela

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lalibela features 11 monolithic churches, hewn from the rocks over 500 years ago. The massive structures are only second to the famous structures in Jordan’s Petra. But Lalibela is still a holy site, and the priests, ceremonies and pilgrims here are as interesting as the churches themselves.

Ancient African Tribes

Southwest of Addis Ababa is the descent from the highlands into the Omo Valley. This remote region is difficult to reach, partly the reason why some of the most ancient African tribes are still living their traditional lives here.

The town of Jinka is the center from which to explore and visit the villages of the Dorse, Aari, Bana, Hamer, and Mursi tribes. The primitive Mursi tribe are now familiar with tourists, for which they insert their famous lip plates. But the more you move away from the town, the more chance of meeting individuals who may have never met white people before.

Other Ethiopian adventure travel highlights to enjoy are:

the historic muslim city of Harar in the East spotting rare wildlife species in the Simien mountains of the North or one of the other National Parks, and the relaxing lakes in the Great Rift Valley in the South

So if you’re looking for an “out of the ordinary” adventure vacation, travel to Ethiopia!

Airline travel with kids is a challenge. Getting them through an airport without losing your mind is even harder. These are the four best tricks that I’ve seen parents use effectively in the airport and on the plane.

1. Give the kids a task in the airport. Make it age appropriate. Obviously, this one falls flat if you’re traveling with an infant, but for toddlers and young children it’s great. Put them in charge of remembering the gate number or of getting a piece of luggage to the gate safely.

You’ll still have to keep a close eye on them but they’ll be focused on their task and less likely to run off and see what a flashing light is or walk backward down the moving sidewalk.

2. Check everything you don’t need. For adults, I usually recommend against checking bags if it can be avoided. But if you’re flying with children, it just simplifies everything. It means there’s less to deal with at security and there’s less to keep track of in the airport.

Take only what you and your kids will need during the flight, which can be a lot. So take a big purse or backpack for you’re carry-on. The TSA allows you to have two carry-on bags but on most regional jets, rolling suitcases will have to be gate checked. If you want to bring 2 carry-on bags on a regional jet they’ll both have to be soft sided. Backpacks, duffel bags and a purses work well because they can fit in the smaller overhead bins and under the seat in front of you. As a reminder, a diaper bag counts as one of your carry-on.

3. Take the right car seat. Airplanes don’t have the most comfortable seats. It’s even worse for kids because the seats are only designed for adults. Car seats are helpful but the FAA has a few restrictions.

You can only use an FAA approved car seat on an airplane. It will say on the safety sticker or packaging if the car seat is approved for airlines. Most car seats are approved for air travel but if your seat looks questionable, the gate agent and the flight attendants are probably going to look for the approval sticker.

In most cases, the car seats have to be placed in the window seat so it doesn’t restrict any passengers from quickly exiting the row in case of an emergency.

Always double check that your car seat is approved for airplanes before heading to the airport. It’s frustrating to haul a bulky seat through the airport only to learn you can’t use it on board.

4. Ignore people who give you dirty looks. There are travelers who will give you dirty looks if your kids are with you in the airport. Many people have horror stories about getting stuck next to crying babies. But you should never feel guilty for bringing your family along.

Just smile. It’s their problem, not yours. Realize that it’s their attitude and negative expectations that’s the problem, not your child. It’s important for you to keep a positive attitude when flying because your children learn from you. If they see you getting upset and frustrated at other people’s reactions, they’re more likely to meet those negative people’s expectations.

When thinking about heading to an area to vacation, one wants the best deal possible for travel and housing; for without those the trip will start bad and most likely end bad as well. Not knowing where you want to vacation can also lead to frustration as well. But taking you’re time to search for a place that not only has comfortable rooms, but also a great attractions will have the greatest impact on how you enjoy your stay. Many people find a few hotel companies that they like, and tend to stick with them as they travel around the world. That’s all well and good, but the only way to truly enjoy and experience the area you’re in is to get out there and be among its people. What better way to do this than to stay in the host countries own brand of hotels. You get exposed to a lot of the traditions and views of the natives, and that’s what every vacationer wants; to get into something new and enjoy themselves.

That’s why for those of you thinking about traveling to Northern Ireland, a great chain for you to check out is the Portsteward hotels branch. They are typically 3 to 4 star hotels that provide very nice accommodations, and are all located in within minutes of the area attractions. There are many Portsteward hotels; some are: The York, Anchorage Inn, and the Strand House. All the hotels in this city are a great way to experience the Irish culture and see many new sights. Some of the hotels are even located near castles that are centuries old with varying histories. You’ll never run out of anything to do while visiting one of these hotels. You will be telling the stories of your visits for decades to come.

While these hotels are very nice to stay in and accommodating, they have gotten the review here and there that didn’t put them in a good light. Being a three star hotel doesn’t necessarily mean that they are bad per say, but don’t expect the same quality of say a Hilton hotel. It all comes down to the tastes of the individual that would consider staying at one of these hotels. Not everyone that visits is going to have a stellar stay, and not everyone that leaves is going to have had a bad one. Just knowing what you are looking for and planning ahead for if things don’t turn out the way you would want is the best way for going about choosing your hotel.

With the high cost of flying increasing due to the fuel prices at the airlines must pay, many travelers are worried because if they take a second bag they may have to pay $15.00 extra. This on top of the fact that there is extra hassle waiting at the Airport, checking in the luggage and then waiting once you arrive to retrieve your luggage which sometimes gets lost.?

This is why many people are packing light and not bothering to take a second bag. However if airline passengers plan on staying a long time at their destination location they may not bring enough clothes to wear. These dilemmas have curtailed air travel for many folks. But, there is a solution to this for the savvy in frugal traveler.?

The secret is to bring extra money with you in small denominations and then go thrift store shopping in your destination city. A couple of hours of thrift store shopping will get enough clothes for you to continue your vacation or traveling endeavors wherever you may go. It also keeps you from doing laundry.

Since you only bought the clothes for between $1 to 10 dollars each, you may choose to donate them back when you are completed with your vacation or just leave them in a hotel room. No need to worry about washing anything.

If you are a good thrift store shopper you can buy a week’s worth of clothes for about $20.00 or less. You can get some killer deals and if you really are happy with your purchased then send them back UPS Ground rate or mail them under the slow-boat-to-China shipping rate. Try this new technique and travel light on your next airline trip. Think on this.

Since September 12th, 2001, the airline industry has had to make some major changes. One of the first things on the list of changes was security. Also, around this same time was when companies were really starting to use the internet, not just for emailing and recording data, but for actual use in controlling ticket prices on a daily basis. After these changes took place, the industry started looking into new technology for their aircraft, since ticket prices increased. Finally, the latest issue in the airline industry is adding additional fees to ticket prices for items that were once free. According to a study done involving a Miami port shuttle service, this particular Miami limousine rentals service has seen a major change in the types of people who fly and the complaints they have since people who drive these vehicles are usually the first to hear about any issues their clients have had with their air travel. Listed below is a more detailed list about the different changes that have occurred in the airline industry since September 12th, 2001:

1.	Security is much different than it was even just fifteen years ago. After September 11th, people were no longer allowed to wait directly outside the gate where their loved ones were arriving. Also, people must now take off their shoes for examination before a flight and all clients are subject to random searches.

2.	The late 1990′s was when companies had just begun to use the internet for simple tasks like emailing and keeping records. The early 2000′s was when the airline industry, along with other companies, began using the internet to their advantage. Now and beginning back then, people who work with the airline companies can keep a daily track of how many individuals are buying seats on what flights. This means airline companies can raise or lower the price of the seats on the flight, depending on demand, on a daily basis.

3.	Because ticket prices were changing, the airlines started to focus on how they could retain their customers. Airlines decided they could do this by offering good entertainment. Instead of the mini screens that used to play maybe one or two movies that not everyone liked, there are individual screens on the back of every seat. There is also a large selection of games, movies, music and even television shows from which people can choose.

4.	Finally, in order to keep up with the cost increase in oil and to keep themselves from bankruptcy, airlines are now charging people for their luggage on domestic flights. Some are even charging for the once free pillow and blanket.

Over the past nine years, the airline industry has had to undergo some major changes in the way they do business. A lot of the changes have not been great for the consumer. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens to the industry in the next few years as oil prices continue to rise and as people get more and more irritated with the rising costs of tickets and additional fees.
